discipline

itsehillintä

It is really a very interesting word. It is spelled almost the same in every European language and even in Russian. But not in Suomi: Itsehillintä. I guess the Finnish knew disciplin before the Romans brought it to the rest of Europe.

  2. Itsehillintä literally means "selfcontrol". And because I'm sitting here with a Finnish-Hungarian dictionary next to me, I can tell you that the Hungarian version is equally strange: "önmérséklet" or "önuralom". I think it's also self-discipline/control... but my Hungarian is too bad to be sure. :)
